I've noticed over the past few months the frequent use of whilst in forums where native speakers of English (A.K.A British, Irish, Scottish, Australian, New Zealanders) mix with Americans. As a student of literature and history this gladdens my heart, but I thought I should point out why this fine word has become so rare in usage in the United States.
Prior to the Revolutionary War, colonists were happy to use whilst, in fact were required to use this fine word in any legal dealings with the King. Whilst was used prominently in Federalist Paper #51---Whilst all authority in it will be derived from and dependent on the society---,but is strangely missing in the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. When asked about this, John Adams stated that whilst was intentionally left out in defiance of British authority over the colonies. Thomas Jefferson concurred, stating that the first official act of Congress was to make while the new whilst! This radical concept was not widely accepted at first, and many farmers, merchants and craftsmen, both Tory and Whig continued to use whilst, oblivious to the official adoption of while. The War of 1812 changed everything. Thousands of British soldiers flooded out of Canada, angry that the former colonies were distrupting hockey games throughout the province. Dolly Madison barely had time to grab the portrait of George Washington and many priceless artifacts of the past, including the usage of whilst burned along with the White House. And so citizens of the United States became a little more ignorant that day, and whilst went the way of sooth, but that is another tale. |
