I live in a village. It is not a village like the Shire with happy little people running around drinking a pint of stout and shooting off massive fireworks. Well, maybe it is. Only the little people might be cannibals, the pint is probably more like a keg and what they are shooting off could be anything from their mouth to fireworks to a 24 lb bronze cannon.
The village, Willis by name was established in 1887 by a farmer, last name Willis who had grand visions for the area yet to be fulfilled. I moved to this quiet little corner of the universe about five years ago to get away from the cookie-cutter sameness of the corporate mass produced lives sponsored by Microsoft. It was quiet too, for two hours. The house I moved into was build around 1860 in the Queen Anne style and had marvelous craftsmanship as well as a healthy need for massive restoration. I love my house but it is a lovely mixture of Addams family gothic horror and story book charm.
As I pondered what work needed to be done I looked out the old lead glass windows and noted through the distortion that the two cars parked on my lawn had reproduced and were now twenty-seven cars. Since I lived on a bit more than a half acre of land I was slightly concerned. I went out to find out why I wasn't invited to the party in my yard. A beefy fellow stepped out of his 12 ton fire engine red pick-up truck onto my lawn. I asked him why everyone was parked in my yard and I was informed that it was okay, the former owner said they could park there. Interested, since the former owner had not lived on this property for five years I introduced myself as the new owner who was not so pleased with the parking lot forming up to my front porch. Angrily and refusing to move his truck, this giant meatball of a man informed me that he was an EXTREMELY influential member of the volunteer fire department and I'd best not mess with him AND he would be speaking to "THE" pastor about my rudeness.

Ah, Willis, my homeland. Not surprised, but somewhat abashed at their behavior (because they are Christians, after all). I hope there are other good stories coming from the village soon!
