What would you do differently if you were President of the United States? Would you be loyal to party or the people who helped get you elected? Would you look at history and the Constitution as the role model for your behavior? Would you be a WAR President, or downsize our military operations? Would you have a choice? How would you turn around the economy? Of course my question also assumes, that you somehow managed to get your message through despite a corporate media that is probably not interested in you and two parties that would probably try to thwart you if you tried to do anything innovative or helpful for the people.
I've often thought about what I would do if I were President. I would definitely kill the military industrial complex. Why do we need to spend many times more money than the rest of the world on "Defense"? Aren't nukes a natural deterrant? Perhaps if we removed our military bases from around the world and focused on being a good neighbor things would change for us. I know...radical concept! All of our troops would be brought home from around the world. Who made us the World's police force anyway? I never voted for that!
With all that money we would no longer be wasting killing non-whites throughout the world, we could focus on eliminating our deficit and improving our schools and infrastructure. The money that our government spends in these areas would revitalize the economy and provide much needed jobs to many Americans. I would have a flat tax. I would eliminate the Fed and the IRS and downsize the government. In order for these measures to be successful, American workers have to be protected from global capitalism. Giving some guy in a sweatshop American jobs so that our underware can be purchased cheaply is stupid. Outscourcing jobs needs to be heavily punished and corporations who try to operate as global entities instead of as American businesses, who don't care how many Americans suffer while their CEOs make millions have to be brought under control.
It is absolutely imperative that we return to a country based on laws. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights must be upheld over all other ideals.
An apology needs to be made to the world for the last 8 years of lawless US disregard of the rest of the world. I would leave NATO and any other alliances with the exception of the UN. I would pay US debts. Bush, Cheney and others need to face charges and I would pursue those charges. I would push to officially outlaw signing statements and executive privledge even though I am pretty sure the founding fathers outlined that these are not legal activities. I return to congress the right to declare war and make a statement that the executive branch cannot initiate a conflict on its own without congressional consent. I would push legislation that protects States Rights from Federal pressure. I would make it illegal to tap Social Security...really!
I would probably get assassinated within my first 60 days in office, but wouldn't it be worth it to be the country we are meant to be instead of the country we've become?

My views, as you know, are similar. Apologize to the world for the idiocy of the last 8 years, get the hell out of Iraq, revoke signing statements, try Bush, Cheney and their croneys for war crimes (torture is a big one in my eyes), bring jobs back to the US, take care of the veterans who the current administration is ignoring, etc.
